Targeted violence against protest activists and journalists in south Iraq since October 2019

Below is a map showing targeted violence against protest activists and journalists covering the protests across south Iraq since October 2019. This was compiled by @benrobinz and @IqanAlkhassaf based on continuous monitoring of protest activity and security incidents across Basra, al-Diwaniyah, Muthanna, Dhi Qar and Maysan only. For full functionality, click “show large map” at the top right of the embedded map.

This map does not include violence against actual protests or demonstrations, but incidents were individual activists have been assassinated, or attempted assassinations, or their homes have been targeted by IEDs. Black markers indicate cases clearly linked to protest activity, grey indicate cases where the link to the protests is less clear.

This type of targeted violence has become more common since December 2018, and we will continue to monitor it going forward.
