This is August’s edition of my south Iraq SIGACT monitoring report covering the provinces of Basra, Maysan, Dhi Qar, Muthanna and Diwaniyah. SIGACT map, pivot table and protest tables are available below.

I recorded 74 total incidents in August, a fall from 114 July, and 92 in June. I recorded 33 protest incidents, down from 70 in July and 51 in June. Protests continue to diminish in contrast to the mass unrest seen last Summer. Major protests over the last few months have been almost exclusively associated with political parties and movements (Sadrists and Hikam Current). Current protest activity is focused on particular sectors attempting to negotiate public sector contracts with much less activity organised around grievances such as poor electricity and water supply.

I am reaching the end of PhD thesis writing, so continue to post the data without further analysis. SIGACT Map, pivot table and protest tables are below.
