Below is a link to an interview I did with Joel Wing for his blog Musings on Iraq. The interview presents my reflections on the victory of the Sa’iroun list which brought together the Sadrists and the Iraqi Communist Party (ICP) in an unlikely alliance. This is just a snapshot of a broader research project I’ve been engaged in over the last few years which looks at efforts to reconstitute Iraq’s secular “civil” politics and interactions between the civil and Sadrist trends. I have an article forthcoming in The International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies which presents part of this research. This piece will have more to say on the theoretical side, appraising existing scholarly approaches to understanding Iraqi social and political dynamics.
