Statement of al-Sayid al-Qaid Muqtada al-Sadr, may God preserve him. Leave for the people the decision over their destiny, for they are the only party which has the right to decide their fate, in all its aspects, political, security, and governmental.
In the name of the Almighty.
Under the title of ‘Leave the decision of their destiny to the people’… for they are the only party with the right to decide their destiny in all its aspects, political, security, and governmental. What is happening with the American intervention in Iraq, even were it by the request of the Iraqi government, is unacceptable, abominable and something to be abhorred and condemned at all levels and by all conventions. Similarly, the intervention of Arab forces in Yemen is also an intervention in the affairs of the dear Yemeni people, no matter what the intervention was, and no matter which side it is to favour. The air strikes in Yemen do not serve the interests of Islamic or Arab unity… In the past, thousands more lives were lost in Iraq because of the buried tyrant, to keep him in power… Nowadays, a similar number of lives will be lost in Yemen because of what you call ‘legitimacy’, but we are far from legitimacy here.
So, we demand that the international and United Nations bodies intervene to end these unjustified wars which are being carried out by the US occupation forces, for the popular mobilisation is capable of victory against Da3sh. We promise everyone that we will banish all the (impudent militias) which have become like Da3sh and their methods, in order that this does not become a sectarian war but a war which is led by the Iraqi army to liberate Iraqi land from terrorists and the enemies of civilization.
I call upon the Arab states, and their head (Saudi Arabia) to take a courageous stance and end the suffering of the people, and to end the exacerbation of sectarianism, and not to be a party to this in any way, for their intervention will inevitably lead to dire consequences.
We do not want the people to fall victim to the grinding, sectarian war, or to the political agreements and disputes which are led by Israel and America to destabilise the Islamic countries, and all of the East… for we are convinced that Tikrit, Anbar, and Mosul are the captives of terrorism and extremism, as is the case in Syria, Yemen and other places.
Therefore, I announce my full readiness to support any international political step to end the suffering in these places, inside Iraq, and outside Iraq. With the knowledge that I am also totally prepared to liberate these places through military means, but I want to advance the moderate voice over the voice of extremism.
Finally, I repeat, the Iraqi army must take ownership of this [process], and hold the ground after its liberation, side by side with the honourable fighters of the popular mobilisation and its mujahidin. And the voice of moderation must be raised in Yemen and Iraq. Peace be upon the people of peace. May God preserve our Iraq, and protect Yemen and its people.
